Scales have been around for thousands of years. One of the earliest weighing scales were discovered near the Indus Valley dating back 2000 BC. Scales have gone through a series of innovations to include the spring loaded scales which are often still used in supermarkets and industrial settings. Scales today are highly advanced and able to detect .0001g. Scales are a necessity in fine tuning your coffee experience. In our coffee brew guides, we identify ratio of coffee to water which assist in getting optimal extraction consistently. The guides are however suggestions since taste is very subjective.
What to look for
Depending on how you plan to use your scale, you will want a digital scale that is thin and not too large. If you will be using it to measure your espresso shots, you will need a scale that can fit a coffee cup or a shot glass between the porta-filter and scale. Most digital scales are able to switch between ounces, grams and pound and can support weights of 3-10 pounds. No need to go too crazy on fancy barista scales, most scales found online will meet your coffee needs.
